HOLMEN, WI — In a highly anticipated matchup with the MVC conference title on the line, the Holmen Vikings baseball team faced off against Aquinas on Thursday night at Viking Field. With a win, Holmen would have secured the title outright, but Aquinas had other plans — surging to a 15-1 victory to earn a share of the conference crown.
The Bluegolds brought an aggressive offensive approach from the opening pitch, posting runs in every inning but the second and sixth. Aquinas was led by Landon Teachout (2-for-4, 4 RBIs), Waylon Hargrove (2B, 4 RBIs), and Isaac Schelfhout (2-for-2, 3 runs scored), while eight different players crossed home plate for the visitors.
Holmen struggled to gain momentum offensively, finishing with just three hits. Joe Meeter went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, and Abe Henderson added a double and scored Holmen’s lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Braeden Linse brought Henderson home with an RBI groundout, but that would be all the Vikings could muster against Aquinas starter Waylon Hargrove, who struck out eight over five strong innings.
Defensively, Holmen was plagued by five errors, while Aquinas played a clean game in the field.
On the mound, Paul Goryl started for the Vikings and was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (just one earned) across 3.2 innings. The Aquinas offense took full advantage of extra opportunities, tallying 14 RBIs on just eight hits.
Despite the outcome, Holmen finishes the regular season with a strong overall record and a share of second place in the MVC standings. The Vikings now turn their attention to postseason play, where they’ll look to bounce back and make a statement.
