The Holmen Vikings exploded for nine runs across the fifth and sixth innings en route to a dominant 10-0 victory over the Sparta Spartans on Thursday night.
After scratching across a run in the opening frame, Holmen’s offense was quiet until the bats came alive in the fifth inning. Sparked by consistent contact and aggressive baserunning, the Vikings pushed across three runs in the fifth before blowing the game wide open with a six-run outburst in the sixth.
Leadoff man Alex Goryl set the tone, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Joe Meeter scored three times, drawing two hit-by-pitches and lacing a double. Braeden Linse drove in a team-high three RBIs, including a key hit in the fifth that ignited the offensive surge. Holmen finished with 11 hits, led by a balanced attack that saw eight different players reach base.
On the mound, Aaron Plozsay was lights-out, tossing five shutout innings while striking out 11 and allowing just two hits. He kept Sparta off balance all night, pounding the zone with a 63% strike rate and retiring batter after batter with surgical precision. Paul Goryl came on to finish the job with a clean sixth.
Sparta struggled to generate any offense, recording just two hits and striking out 11 times. They left six runners on base and never found a rhythm against Holmen’s pitching staff. Defensive miscues also hurt, as the Spartans committed two errors and allowed several extra bases.
