Holmen Edges Sun Prairie West in Regional Final Thriller
June 5, 2025 | Holmen, WI

With a gutsy pitching performance and clutch hitting in the sixth inning, the Holmen Vikings edged Sun Prairie West 2-1 on Thursday night to capture the WIAA Division 1 regional championship. The win propels Holmen into the sectional semifinals and continues their postseason momentum.

Senior pitcher Aaron Ploszay went the distance for the Vikings, tossing a complete-game four-hitter. He struck out four, walked two, and held the Wolves scoreless over the final six innings to earn the win.

Sun Prairie West struck first in the top of the first inning when Easton Davenport reached on a single and later scored on a passed ball, giving the Wolves an early 1-0 lead. Holmen responded immediately in the bottom half as Jude Anderson drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a two-out double by Abe Henderson to even the score.

The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth. Joe Meeter led off the inning with a double to left and came around to score on another clutch RBI from Henderson, putting Holmen up 2-1.

Ploszay sealed the win with a quick seventh, inducing a pair of groundouts before striking out the final batter.

Henderson led the Vikings with two RBIs, while Meeter and Brennon Metzler each added doubles. Despite striking out 10 Holmen batters, Sun Prairie West starter Casey Wambach took the loss after allowing three hits and two earned runs over six innings.

With the victory, Holmen improves to 17-9 on the season and will now prepare for a sectional semifinal showdown on Tuesday.
