Holmen Blanks Sparta, Advances to Regional Final
June 4, 2025 | Holmen, WI
Behind a dominant performance on the mound by Paul Goryl and timely hitting in the middle innings, the Holmen Vikings shut out Sparta 5-0 in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal on Wednesday evening. The win advances Holmen to the regional final.
Goryl was lights out for the Vikings, throwing a complete-game two-hitter. The senior right-hander struck out three, didn’t issue a walk, and faced just 23 batters over seven innings. His efficiency kept the Spartans off balance all night, allowing only two singles and benefiting from strong defense behind him.
After three scoreless innings, Holmen broke through in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff single by Tyler Rosenow, followed by an RBI double from Braeden Linse, opened the scoring. Later in the inning, Brennon Metzler delivered the big blow with a two-run double, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Metzler stayed hot at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two doubles and a game-high three RBIs. Alex Goryl added an RBI single in the sixth to cap Holmen’s scoring.
Sparta’s Jackson Bender took the loss despite a solid outing, allowing six hits and four earned runs over 5.2 innings. He struck out four but was undone by Holmen’s clutch hitting in the fourth.
